Abstract

The literary tradition and the Epistolary diary by V.P. Astafiev

The article is devoted to the collection of letters by the known Russian prose writer V.P. Astafiev in the book No answer to me… The epistolary diary of 1952-2001 (Krasnoyarsk) published in 2009. The epistolary literature has an ancient tradition testifying to the urgency of the epistolary form at various times. The piece by Astafiev extends and updates the developed tradition of the correspondence created by the outstanding figures of the time which is no doubt of great historical and cultural value. The book No answer to me is some kind of the author’s confession which reveals the writer as a many-sided individuality: the real person, the creative person, the artist, the witness and the participant of the historical changes in the country. Astafiev creates a new form of the epistolary narration which is close to a literary diary. The synthetic nature of the genre allowed the author embody the life of spirit against the real historical life in the second half of the 20-th century.
