Abstract

This article discusses the question of what role love played in the life of Ivan Turgenev and how it was reflected in his work. First, the story of the writer's forty-year relationship with the singer Paulina Viardot is presented. Other women in his life are also mentioned. The second part of the article characterizes Turgenev's concept of tragic love and shows its reflection in his stories. The reasons for the love-inflicted sufferings of his heroes, the types of female and male images in his love stories, biographical elements in these works, as well as the connection between Turgenev's thought and Schopenhauer's philosophy are considered. The article uses a biographical and historical-literary method.
