Abstract

Irony, innovation, connotation… The Ironic and Connotative Potential of New Personal Names

The term connotation is used in many scientifi c disciplines (including philosophy, logic, linguistics, and literary studies), which causes diffi culties in defi ning it uniformly and makes the boundaries of the term blurred. Connotations often come into play in the context of innovations, and they are then particularly eff ective to convey irony. The present contribution focuses on these aspects, aiming to present them on the basis of new personal designations. To this end, the connotative, ironic, and evaluative potential of new personal designations and punning mechanisms used to form new words will be briefl y discussed. The results of the analysis underscore the creativity of language participants and reveal the pragmatic added value and innovative-playful dimension of the presented language material.
