Abstract
The poetics of chance in the novel The Grimaces of Life by Victor Mort
This article, dedicated to the novel by Victor Mort, is another study of a little-known representative of the second wave of emigration, whose work has not yet entered the sphere of literary analysis. Since neither the writer’s biography nor his works are known to researchers of emigrant culture, the author gives a brief outline of Mort’s life and identifi es three main trends in his rather extensive prose legacy. Attention is drawn to the humorous pathos of Mort’s stories, which is atypical of emigrant literature, and to the genre of the travelogue, which the writer often used. The analysis of the poetics of chance in the novel Grimaces of Life occupies the main place. The author identifi es several types of categories of chance, as well as the role and functions of chance in the plot of the novel. The methodological basis of the study consists of historical-literary, biographical, typological and motivational methods with some elements of ontological poetics. Thus, the aim of the article is not only to substantiate the role of chance in the plot of the genre, but also, in a broader sense, to bring to the attention of researchers the work of a hitherto unknown representative of the second wave of emigration.
